M Is FOR MASHUP...To Mash, Or Not To...By DJ Useo

M Is FOR MASHUP - June 11th, 2008
To Mash, Or Not To...
By DJ Useo

I've come to know a fair number of bootleggers & home producers over the last few years, & to a person they all began mixing because of their love for music. Many have the gleam of potential money in their eye; a useful state to be sure. Some even have ambitions of a fame of some sort. Lots come into mashing by way of being a live dj. Many discovered bastard pop while surfing the net. I myself had production experience recording symphony orchestras that increased my interest in home studio recording. I couldn't do what I heard mash makers doing (yet), but I was intrigued.

Like so many before (after) me did, we gathered some mp3's & whatever mixing programs we could obtain with the lofty goal (lol) of making grafted tunes we could play & share with others. I got advice early on from a strong woman in my life to focus less on the music & more on the music-makers. She told me to place a large emphasis on the people themselves, & I'd reap friendship as well as inspiration. I've not always been the most social creature. It took some adjusting & much patience. Sure 'n it was about the best instructions I ever got. I've established warm friendships with the best people you can imagine. Only a few chumps.

All of us on the net want the same things-something interesting to do with people you enjoy 'hanging' with. Perhaps some prefer to do it with less clothing. LMAO. Bootleggers aren't making money posting tracks for you. It actually costs them money, yet I've only seen a few ask for contributions. The manner of reward for making mashups is when you find out people played them. This means comments, & let me tell you they are not flowing most of the time. I've seen even the best bootleggers get only 1 or 2 comments. Lately, there's a lot of competition & if you don't post regularly, the new audience doesn't even know you. My personal dj slogan of 'not mandatory' came in useful in keeping me from being a pest about asking people to check out my new creations. Whether a track gets comments or not, you keep on plugging away with the tracks you like best.

So it's not exactly easy to hit the bootleg scene, but there's always room for more as due to the above-cited conditions there's a high attrition rate for mashup mixers. So many I've met depart when lack of response, real world hardships, or outright hostility from goons on the net eat away at their creativity to the point the joy is gone. So many leave taking with them their personal talents along with the mashups that might have been. I've been involved in the world of graphic art where there exists a similar state of burnout. Art comes from the heart where hate lives as well. Take some happy painters, or bootleggers & start harassing them & the art will cease to flow.

To sum up this discussion of mashup motivation I urge you readers to leave some comments sometimes. It's cheating yourself to withhold your presence from our posts. You don't even have to be a bootlegger to say something. And to all you bootleggers, at the stage where you need some time off, please rest, recuperate, and when you feel like it, come back, cause there's a place for you. Anyone who perceives musical tones through auditory transitions I welcome comments and contributions from. The best part of commenting usually comes after since many mixers translate positive communication into more posted material. Then we all feel the benefit & you assume your true role in the mashup world as a music motivator.

Thanks for reading, & may your mashup experience be fruitful.

Summer Booty 2008-The Summer Of Two Parts

Summer Booty 2008

The Summer Of Two Parts

By DJ Useo

From my perspective, the winter stayed far too long & I have no patience for Spring, so let the Summer begin!

In mashupland Summer is marked by the new SUMMER BOOTY bootleg music complilation. This year again the release features over twenty international home producers doing the thing they do best. Starting with the musical premise of 'a bootleg, remix,or mashup' that evokes the feeling of the endless summer, perhaps a hot day's drive in a convertible while the stereo blasts, they more than delivered. From the opening track submitted by UK's popular mixer The Geez & the immediate release of a video to accompany, it was clear the Summer mood prevailed.
youtube.com/watch?v=8PSUQoVMeQY

Quickly, more tracks arrived from various well-known DJ's & soon tracks like Liam Nicklen's "Sneaky Exhale" (Liam Nicklen vs Sneaky Sound System) & Pomatic's "Summertime Blown" (Beyonce vs. Snoop Dogg vs. Diddy & Notorious B.I.G.) were filling out the upcoming release. Fast-rising mashup star, Virtual DJ, did his magic on Shakira & the Thievery Corporation & before you could say 'bastard pop,' the instant classic "Lebanese Thieves Don't Lie" was ready to burn itself into your memory.

More videos came quickly in the form of Alpha1999's "Faith Be Dub To Me (George Michael vs Beats International) [youtube.com/watch?v=FjFzNybyJ3I&feature=user] an amazingly appealing track will get caught between your ears, & not easily dislodged, as if you'd want that. Pomatic's track yielded a
super video hand-made by the ever-talented Guttorm [youtube.com/watch?v=BoFROkrPvYs&feature=user].
All set a tone that inspired, so soon the entire collection was at hand. An assortment of such Summer potency that you will all want to re-play till snow returns.

In the finest SUMMER BOOTY tradition, there's a seamless one-hour mix containing both discs. This years' long mix features the return of DJ Petrushka & her strong hand at joining wildly disparate musical styles. It's a needed talent when dealing with a collection like SUMMER BOOTY 2008. In her own words she says "I love music very much, and these tracks had me loving them. When I play them I feel like I've got my Ray Bans on, I've got my foot to the floorboard, & the wind & the music is whooshing past my head".

You'll feel the vibe too, when you drive over to summerbooty2008 (http://summerbooty2008.moonfruit.com/) for the links to access the collection.

Don't miss tracks by the above-mentioned, DJ Spider, Simon Iddol, Miss Frenchie, Cheekyboy, Voicedude, Supakon (catches breath), DJ M.i.F, DJ Fac, MP3J, Aekon, DJ Morgoth, DJ Magnet, DJTopcat, Corrupt DJ's, Dottysmash, Mad Martigan, & me, DJ Useo. A line-up so good I'll say it 2wice. lol

There's also a section for SUMMER BOOTY 2008 at summerbooty.multiply.com/
Thanks to Alpha1999 for his amazing art direction.
Thanks to DJ Petrushka for helping with day to day planning.
Thanks to all the bootleggers who gave of their time & energy.
& thanks to the label stars who make it all possible with the world's great pop music.

Summer Booty-A Sound Unsound Network Production

Summer Booty – A Sound Unsound Network Production
http://sound-unsound-network.com

The most anticipated album of the summer is finally available to download :) The sun may not be out yet but kick back and grab a beer (or a white wine if your a lady) and devour Summer Booty :D

As Mungo Jerry so eloquently stated, “You can reach right up and touch
the sky.” They, of course, were talking about summertime (or, perhaps something their urologist prescribed them for kidney stones). One thing is for sure, your hands will be perpetually raised in the air when listening to this compilation of artists bit by the heat of a thousand suns and sometimes cooled down by leaning poolside with a nice Bacardi mixer. Come and let your spirit fly, indeed!

The phenoms on this album may steal your sunshine, only to bring it back with beats and beams for the total opposite of a cruel, cruel summer. Mr. Rusty and Topflyte wanna bounce the beach ball back and between your ears, while Supakon gets it caught in the net for a twist and turn of the sphere. And, speaking of turning, Maxwell Jump and Creasos not only spin the tables, but require spinning of your bodies and minds (but no shirts and shoes are ever required).

Everyone out of the pool for the next fifteen minutes, for there will be an adult swim lifeguarded by World Famous Audio Hacker and MarkyBoy; however, they will not blow whistles, but blow the roof of the snack bar. Where, incidentally, you can check out today’s special: a Virtual DJ-mixed creation with beats and breaks (extra hot peppers will cost you a notch up on your headphones). And, speaking of DJs, tonight’s Dip and Dance will have tunes from Le Clown, MXR, and Spider, playing non-stop favourites for when the temps stay up much like the partiers do till dawn.

Icky will be there as the summer sun is once again raised for a wake-up call, handing you a day’s worth of Bobby Martinis, made with the traditional vermouth and the non-traditional cut from a crate, aged.
Here, your day will be filled with a party at the Hahnstudios where the soundproof is opened as is their dance floor. So, whether you are in Kingston Town, on Sesame Street, the Latin Corner, or anywhere around the world (repeat 72x), you will feel the sensual seduction even when these boys of summer have gone.
Thank you to (in no particular order) HahnStudios, Bobby Martini, Guvnor, Supakon, World Famous Audio Hacker, Icky, DJ MXR, Mr. Rusty, DJ Spider, Corrupt DJ’s, Creasos, DJ Le Clown, Virtual DJ, mARKYbOY and MaxwellJump for the excellent tracks that they have submitted to the album.

An extra special thank you goes to:

The pre-release team – Mr. Rusty, Supakon, Andy_S, Icky and Guvnor for the numerous hours of work they put in to the track selection process for Summer Booty.

Bobby Martini for his mastering of the tracks that we were asked to master for Summer Booty.

Andy_S for the domains summerbooty.com and summerbooty.co.uk

Mr. Rusty for the Summer Booty artwork

and last but not least Neckice for his brilliant Linear notes.
